Why is the word "millennials" spelled with double L and double N? : NoStupidQuestions
Main Post: Why is the word "millennials" spelled with double L and double N? : NoStupidQuestions
Is the L Word really weird or am I just too young to understand.
Main Post:
So I’m 15 and I stopped watching the L Word somewhere during season two because it was just too much cringe I guess. Besides the terrifying fashion of the early 2000s a lot of stuff really bothered me about it.
A lot of to had to do with some stuff Bette and Tina would do. Like when Bette like humped the jail wall because she was just soooooo fired up about the carpenter lady, like is it that serious? Or when she and Tina had angry sex some time after that it was almost scary cuz they were crying and stuff and it was just so odd. What really got me is when Shane was having sex with the flower delivery girl and she kept moving back and forth like she had on a strap or something but she didn’t have one. I was just confused as to how that made sense.
At that point I thought “Should I even be thinking about this? Obviously I know nothing about sex but this doesn’t seem ok?” I’m pretty mature and don’t usually feel any certain way about sexual situations in tv and movies but something just seems off about it. I just feel like I’d appreciate the series more when I’m older. Do think it’s my age messing with my head or is it just the Hollywood bullshit?
Top Comment: There have always been strong critics of The L Word for some of the reasons you just mentioned. When the show first started I was about 14. I would sneak record episodes on a vcr and watch it alone. I don’t remember having thoughts like yours (which are valid!) I just remember thinking “wow, there are people like me in this world”. I think, for me, the representation it gave outweighed any flaws it had. It was a show by women for women, though some may disagree. Of course it was a television series so drama and sex were to be expected even if not always accurate. It helped me and probably many other people to come to terms with themselves and love themselves while having a laugh and a cry. I remember listening to the Elka and KC podcast which reviewed episodes and they had great insight and honesty to the series. Wish I could find those to share with you! It may be good for you to wait awhile to watch it further. Understand this was in a different time and what they were showing and doing was unheard of on television with the exception of Queer as Folk. And perhaps on the heels of that it was the same unfiltered representation that we craved. These are just my personal thoughts and I can understand your questions and concerns. And it gets more cringe worthy with Jenny each and very episode so get used to it!! 😄 (those damn stories, Jenny, please)
this show took everything i loved about the L word and made it even better

Top Comment: I am of the same mind. ALOTO is great because it doesn't feel like a gimmick, like they packed so many queer characters into a show but they are so much more than just their sexuality and sex appeal. Plus they actually give the spotlight to a spectrum of queer that The L Word (the original) desperately needed.
Is the L word worth the watch?
Main Post:
I’m finishing up my 3rd watch of OITNB (it’s so good!), and I’ve really been looking for more women- focused queer shows. I’m about to start the L word (even though I wish it had more diversity, I feel like it’s a “for the culture” watch). Do you all think it’s worth watching at least once? And if anyone has Netflix and Hulu recommendations for more GOOD queer shows, I’d love to hear them.
Top Comment: It’s ridiculous, but iconic, and I think it’s worth it for the culture aspect and because making fun of it and critiquing its shortcomings with other queer people is fun. You could also just pick up the newer season (Generation Q) if you didn’t want to watch the entire back catalog. Others I liked that are different vibes but might be of interest: Pose, Feel Good, Sense8, The Bisexual, Killing Eve, A League of Their Own.
The L Word
Main Post:
I have never seen the show The L Word. I’m a late bloomer” and was always scared to watch the show because I thought people would be suspicious of me and figure me out (I didn’t even have it figured out myself). But I always wanted to watch it and now that I’m no longer hiding in the closet I want to know if it’s actually worth watching. I’m super picky with what I watch so I thought I’d get some opinions before I “waste my time” Ty :)
Top Comment: It’s kind of the lesbian equivalent of Sex and the City in my eyes... it hasn’t aged well, there are parts that are problematic, but that’s a reflection of the time it was produced. I’m also a late bloomer and watched it start to finish whilst I was coming to terms with myself, honestly I really enjoyed it. It felt like I was catching up on a rite of passage that I’d missed!
Finally watching L Word and...

SO BUMMED at the lack of body diversity. I know this was filmed in early 2000s, when everyone still thought Delia's, Pacific Sunwear and Abercrombie and Fitch was the style (not just clothing but body type) but as a 42 year old woman, recently come out, with beautiful curves....I can't see myself in these characters. Am I the only one?? (I do enjoy the show, just bummed no one is over a size 4 or even 8) (For context I'm a 14/16)

They saved a lot of money in the bra department. I'm still on season 1!
Does the L word get better? I kind of hate it.
Main Post:
I'm in season 2.

I watched a few episodes. It bored the fuck outta me so I stopped. The writing isn't all that great but the sex scenes are hot. I think a lot of people cling to it because it's the only lesbian-centered show we've got.
The original l word is notoriously known as problematic, but was it really as bad as people make it to be?
Main Post:
Look, I totally agree that it had many bad moments that were problematic - but how long can we have this narrative going? For example, everyone hates how the trans community is portrayed in the show, but for me personally it was just the realest and most raw portrayal of what trans folks went through in that time period (and still do). The characters can be jackasses and we all know that, but guess what - that's the whole point. I absolutely hated how transphobic Alice was, and in general she's a very nosy and problematic character in the show. However, there is never a mention of how Alice is actually not that good of a person in any threads I see discussing the show. Why do we call a show problematic, when it's just showcasing problematic behaviours and characters? The l word was sooooo groundbreaking to be reduced to just being problematic. And here we have the outcome of this - The absolute mess Gen Q is trying not to be "problematic".
Top Comment: With some exceptions, I don't think it was problematic, I think it was reflective of the times.
